Local scholars and community groups began advocating for equality, education, and self-awareness. To the colonial authorities, however, such movements complicated governance. They labeled these progressive efforts as “corrupting ideas” (惡化思想) and branded Changhua a “city of ideological deterioration” (思想惡化之地).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut the people of Changhua reclaimed the label with pride. What was meant as an insult became a symbol of resistance and enlightenment.
